Final Reflection and Blog Posting on the Impact of Technology
The information in this course has helped me develop my technology skills as a teacher. Richardson (2010) has introduced me to many web 2.0 tools I would have overlooked. Now I have various web 2.0 tools I have experienced and can use in my lessons. It has been stated educators will be able to bring their students' knowledge to better prepare them for future college and careers (Richardson, 2015). I can now use blogs and podcasts in my lessons, and I feel this prepares my students for the future. Students need many different technologies for them to learn (Blair, 2012). I think I have increased my knowledge of web 2.0 tools and prepared my students for their future.
I have deepened my knowledge of the teaching and learning process related to integrating technology into the classroom. I have learned new web 2.0 tools to use in my lessons. I have increased my knowledge of how to use Twitter to become a better collaborator (ISTE, 2020). I also have been able to implement blogs and podcasts into my lessons. I will continue to apply the knowledge I have learned into the continually changing classrooms of the 21st-century. In the future, I will continue to use these web 2.0 tools. I will also continue to learn new web 2.0 tools and technologies. Wali and Popal (2020) have shown that when educators learn new technology, they can improve student learning.
One new web 2.0 tool I am open to using in my classroom is wikis. I want to create lessons and have them posted to a wiki that my students will access at home or school. I think a potential roadblock to the wikis implementation is communication. I feel that my student's parents may struggle with accessing the wiki and struggle with the written directions to complete the wiki lesson. I am currently looking for solutions to the possible roadblocks.
The International Society for Technology in Education Standards (ISTE) is a set of standrds for both students and educators. The ISTE standard for Students I feel is meet by using lesson wikis is "Empowered Learner Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences'' (International society for technology in education standards for students, 2020 p.2). This standard is about students being able to have an active role in their learning. I want my students to make choices when it comes to their education.
The lesson wiki also meets the ISTE standards for educators. "Design of Learning Experiences and the Environment: Candidates design learning experiences and foster learning environments that integrate various technologies" (International Society for technology in education for educators 2020, p. 2). As an educator, I must continue to create lessons that encourage my students to grow their knowledge.
I have created two long-term SMART goals to transform my classroom into an environment where students are able to gain skills for their future in society and the workplace.
By the end of the 2020-2021 school year, I will create a Twitter account to use in my classroom and post weekly announcements to increase parent communication by 50%.
I plan to accomplish this goal by creating a Twitter account and sharing my information with parents and students. I will then create a schedule of when I will tweet announcements. I will be able to see parent communication increase by parents retweeting or commenting on my tweets.
By the end of distance learning, I will have created a 20 item resource list of web 2.0 tools, including descriptions, future uses, and relevance to special education.
I will accomplish this goal by researching web 2.0 tools I was introduced to in this class. I will then begin adding information to each tool regarding what it is, how I can use it, and how it will fit into my special education classroom. After researching 20 web 2.0 tools, I will be able to master this goal. I feel this is a good goal for me. With distance learning continuing to happen and the scale back of phases in my state, I will need to continue collecting web 2.0 tools to support my students.
This course's experience aligns with how I want to implement more web 2.0 tools into my current professional practice. My professional practice dilemma is not knowing where to find web 2.0 tools for my special education students. I want to be able to have my students experience using technology. I want to create steps that they would be able to do and use late in their life. My MSED specialization in integrating technology into the classroom. I feel I am relating my professional practice and my current dilemma to my specialization. I identified a long-term goal to list various web 2.0 tools and how they relate to special education. I hope that this list will help me continue to encourage my students 21st-century skills.
